Case studies highlight lessons learned from developing and implementing effective data standards across transit, maritime shipping, and aviation.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 21, 2023)—The Coalition for Reimagined Mobility (ReMo), a global initiative shaping policy and ideas for transportation systems that more efficiently, sustainably, and equitably move people and goods, today released a white paper outlining best practices for the development, adoption, and management of data standards across the global freight sector from real world examples across transportation’s transit, maritime shipping and aviation industries.
The white paper, “Establishing Data Standards for the Global Freight Sector: Applied Lessons Across Transportation,” builds on ReMo’s 2022 freight report, “Solving the Global Supply Chain Crisis with Data Sharing” and the subsequent issue brief, “The Importance of Data Standards and Interoperability in Global Supply Chains.” By looking at the success of data standards in the public transit, maritime shipping, and aviation industries, this white paper aims to help inform policymakers and industry stakeholders in the freight sector and beyond of the best practices for adopting modern data standards that will make the freight sector more efficient, resilient, and sustainable.
“We can learn a lot from the successful adoption and ongoing use of data standards across industries,” said Christine Weydig, ReMo’s Executive Director. “This white paper looks at examples that show the best ways to develop and maintain data standards. These case studies can help the freight industry—and all transportation sectors—increase efficiency, enhance business resilience, and significantly cut back on harmful emissions and pollution by leveraging existing technology to communicate more effectively.”
“ReMo’s past work has shown why data exchange matters, and how to create future-focused data exchange systems that level the playing field and improve operational efficiencies for the whole freight industry,” said Weydig. “This white paper highlights lessons learned from creating effective data standards in other areas of transportation to inform implementation of standards in the freight sector.”
The white paper is part of the ongoing work ReMo has done to show the economic, national security, and environmental benefits of adopting data standards in transportation.
